Our Expertise
DW specialises in the alteration and extension of domestic buildings and small to medium commercial premises.
We pride ourselves in being able to bring high level technical analysis and design expertise to smaller projects in a way that is appropriate to this scale of construction. Small does not always mean easy, and we have the skill and ability to produce designs for complex problems.
We are skilled in converting or extending older stone masonry buildings. We have an in depth knowledge of many building types and historic building methods, and the associated appropriate methods of construction and materials specification.
Our expert knowledge of building types, construction methods, defects, and ground conditions allows us to prepare clear and helpful Structural Engineer's condition reports.
As with all other Structural Engineers we have extensive experience in all common materials such as timber frame, steelwork, reinforced concrete, glazing, cold rolled steel, aluminium, and SIPS.

We are committed to the professional development of our staff in order that they are aware of current issues, the latest products, and efficient design methodology. Design software is ever evolving and we will ensure that our staff are able to use the up to date tools that they need.
DW has a robust quality control system which aims to ensure that we do what is asked in the time that we agreed and with no errors. All of our designs and drawings will be checked for technical competence and for consistency with the Architectural design.
Our Philosophy
Communication is key. We will keep you informed about the progress of your project through our design process. We are happy to answer questions and clarify our designs and the decisions we have made along the way. We would rather you asked and avoided doing something that needed to be corrected later.
We acknowledge that our Client and their Architects design are the priority. Structural Engineering is important, but we would always look to fit our design to the desired Architectural solution.
Your dealings with us should be straightforward and transparent. We understand that making changes to your home is stressful and we aim to avoid the Structural Engineering becoming another burden.
Price and timescale are important. Our designs always try to minimise the cost of your building work and the time taken to complete it.
Sustainability matters. Where possible we will specify the most environmentally sustainable construction products and avoid designing in waste. We will avoid specifying environmentally damaging practises and will always keep one eye on what is best for our planet.

With 20+ years experience as a Consulting Engineer DW is able to work with you to find the best solution for your project. Our wide range of projects from new build properties to basement conversions, means that whatever your query, it is likely that we have encountered something similar and will be able to help.
Using our long time involvement with the Scottish Building Warrant system we are able to guide you through the process and avoid the bump and dead ends which can cost time and money.
Whilst construction methods change, there is no substitute for experience when asking the question "does it look right"? DW has always been closely involved with site work and is well placed to provide pragmatic commonsence advice and guidance when required.

David was educated, lived, and worked in Edinburgh for the last 30 years, but don't hold that against him.
Having seen the light, he relocated West in the summer of 2021 and set up DW Structural Engineer to continue the work he has always enjoyed.
